The BBS Weekly Log of Experience Hours, box by box
Every California associate (and LMFT trainee) keeps a weekly log of their hours, signed by their supervisor. It is the Board of Behavioral Sciences' Weekly Log of Experience Hours, and later it is what your Experience Verification forms are totalled from. This page goes through the form box by box for AMFT, APCC and ASW, with an example week and the mistakes we see most. It is our summary of the Board's forms (revised August 2022) as we read them on October 23, 2026.
A reference, not legal or licensing advice. Confirm is not affiliated with the California Board of Behavioral Sciences and does not speak for it. We summarize the Board's published requirements as a convenience and they can change or be read differently, so this page may be incomplete or out of date. The Board has the final say: always confirm your requirements with the Board and your supervisor. Use this page at your own risk. See the Terms.
What the weekly log is for
- One log per supervisor and per work settingThe form says so at the top. Two sites, or two supervisors at one site, means separate logs.
- Your supervisor signs every weekEach week's column ends with a supervisor signature box.
- You keep the logs; you don't mail them inThe form says not to submit it to the Board unless the Board asks for it. When you apply, your supervisor totals the logs onto an Experience Verification form, and the logs are your proof if the Board asks.
- One page holds ten weeksEach column is one week, headed "Week of" with the week's date, plus a Total Hours column.
The top of the form
Your name (last, first, middle), your supervisor's name, the name and address of the work setting, your BBS file number if you know it, your associate number (AMFT, APCC or ASW) and the year.
The lines, by license
Each week you fill in one number per line. The lettered lines are the same idea on all three forms, with different wording.
| Line | AMFT | APCC | ASW |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Direct counseling with individuals, groups, couples or families | Direct counseling with individuals, groups, couples or families | Clinical psychosocial diagnosis, assessment and treatment, including individual or group psychotherapy or counseling |
| A1 (part of A) | Diagnosis and treatment of couples, families and children | None | Individual or group psychotherapy |
| B | Non-clinical experience | Non-clinical experience | Client-centered advocacy, consultation, evaluation, research, workshops, seminars, training sessions or conferences, and direct supervisor contact |
| Supervision (part of B) | B1 individual or triadic; B2 group | B1 individual or triadic; B2 group | Individual or triadic; group |
| C | Total hours for the week: A + B | Total hours for the week: A + B | Total hours for the week: A + B (the form prints "maximum 40 hours/week") |
On the AMFT and APCC forms, non-clinical experience includes supervision, psychological testing, writing clinical reports, writing progress or process notes, client-centered advocacy, and workshops, seminars, training sessions or conferences.
The rule people trip on: C is only A plus B
- A1 is already inside ACouples, families and children hours (AMFT) or psychotherapy hours (ASW) are some of your line A hours, not extra hours.
- The supervision lines are already inside BSupervision is non-clinical time, so it goes in B, and B1 and B2 (or the ASW's two supervision lines) only show how much of B it was.
- So the total never adds the sub-linesThe forms say it in a footnote: when totalling the week, don't include the subcategories; use C = A + B.
An example week, filled in
An AMFT associate sees clients for 12 hours, 4 of them with a family. They spend 3 hours on notes, have 1 hour of individual supervision and 2 hours of group supervision.
| Line | What goes in | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A | 12 | All client hours |
| A1 | 4 | The family sessions, part of the 12 |
| B | 6 | 3 hours of notes plus 3 hours of supervision |
| B1 | 1 | Individual supervision, part of the 6 |
| B2 | 2 | Group supervision, part of the 6 |
| C | 18 | 12 + 6 |
This week also meets the supervision rule: with more than 10 client hours, an associate needs two units of supervision in the week, and 1 hour individual plus 2 hours group is two units. See how BBS hours count for the weekly rules.
Mistakes we see most
- Adding A1, B1 or B2 into the totalIt inflates the week. C is A + B and nothing else.
- Two sites or two supervisors on one logEach supervisor, at each work setting, gets their own log, and later their own Experience Verification form.
- Leaving supervision out of BSupervision counts as non-clinical time, so it belongs in B as well as in the supervision lines.
- Weeks with no supervisionHours in a week with less than one unit of supervision don't count toward the 3,000 until that week has its supervision.
- More than 40 hours in a weekThe Board credits at most 40 hours in a week across all your settings, and at most 6 hours of supervision.
- Collecting signatures months laterSupervisors change jobs. A log signed each week is much easier than tracking someone down at application time.
